LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER

I have forever been dismayed that the beginning of the calendar year is in the middle of winter. So I was delighted and intrigued to learn many years ago, from an Iranian friend that the Persian new year (called Nowruz) happened at the vernal equinox. This festival symbolizes renewal and harmony with nature. It made so much sense that the beginning be on the first day of spring—the season of renaissance and renewal.

In my corner of the world Spring is in full swing. Isn’t the green just a balm to the soul? Isn’t it glorious to see trees and flowers unfurl and show their splendor? Have you heard the birds?!

I ponder how amazing our natural world is on this Earth Day. I pray that the big polluting industries listen and make enlightened changes, and that my meager efforts somehow help preserve our planet's wellbeing. Future generations need to experience and know this goodness.
Happy Earth Day!
